Frequently asked questions

What is the vig in sports betting?

The vig (or juice) is the margin a sportsbook builds into its odds. It is why the implied probabilities of both sides of a market add up to more than 100% — the extra is the book's commission.

How do you remove the vig from odds?

Convert both sides to implied probability, add them to get the total margin, then scale each side down so they sum to 100%. The result is the no-vig (fair) probability, which you can convert back to fair odds. This calculator supports multiplicative, additive, and power de-vig methods.

Why calculate fair odds?

Fair, no-vig odds from a sharp book like Pinnacle are the best available estimate of an outcome's true probability. Comparing them to the price at another book tells you whether a bet has positive expected value.

Which de-vig method should I use?

The multiplicative method is the simplest and most common. Additive and power methods distribute the margin differently and can be more accurate on lopsided markets with heavy favorites. For most two-way markets the differences are small.
